If there’s one genre that Bollywood never fails to deliver, it’s comedy. From iconic films like Golmaal to new-age films like Fukrey 3, comedy movies have been winning hearts time and again.
While action films have been taking home all the prizes, here are some Bollywood comedy movies that are worth watching:
Thank You For Coming
This Hindi-language sex comedy movie made waves due to its all-female leads, most of which included popular content creators. Directed by Karan Boolani and produced by Rhea Kapoor and Ekta Kapoor. Thank You For Coming stars Bhumi Pednekar, Shehnaaz Gill, Dolly Singh, Kusha Kapila and Shibani Bedi. It was written by Radhika Anand and Prashasti Singh.
The plot for Thank You For Coming revolves around five best friends who discover the true depth of their friendship and love. The film premiered at the 48th 2023 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in the Gala Presentations section on September 15, 2023. It was theatrically released on October 6, 2023, and was produced by Balaji Motion Pictures.
Fukrey 3
Another recent release that’s been breaking box office records. Fukrey 3 was directed by Mrighdeep Singh Lamba and produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani under the banner Excel Entertainment.
The comedy movie is the third installment in the Fukrey franchise and a sequel to Fukrey Returns (2017). It stars Pulkit Samrat, Varun Sharma, Manjot Singh, Richa Chadha and Pankaj Tripathi.
Fukrey 3 hit the big screens on September 28, 2023. It is now available on Amazon Prime Video with the rental option. It follows the events of the previous film, where the Government of Delhi provides Hunny, Choocha, and Lali with a store named Janta Store. The three run the store together alongside Pandit, but end up in shambles and are getting by doing small jobs.
Dream Girl 2
Raaj Shaandilyaa directed Dream Girl 2, the sequel to Dream Girl (2019) starring Ayushmann Khurana. Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor produced it under Balaji Motion Pictures.
The comedy movie also stars Ananya Panday, Paresh Rawal, Annu Kapoor, Rajpal Yadav, Vijay Raaz, Asrani, Abhishek Banerjee, Manjot Singh and Seema Pahwa. The film revolves around Karam. He secretly turns his female alter ego into a dancer and woos a millionaire’s son in hopes of clearing his family debts and impressing his fiancée’s father.
The producers released Dream Girl 2 theatrically on August 25, 2023, and it garnered over USD 16 million worldwide, emerging as the tenth-highest-grossing Hindi film of 2023. The film is available to stream on Netflix.
Kathal: A Jackfruit Mystery
Ashok Mishra wrote and Yashowardhan Mishra directed the satirical-comedy drama movie Kathal. Shobha Kapoor, Ekta Kapoor, Guneet Monga and Achin Jain produced it under the banners Balaji Motion Pictures and Sikhya Entertainment.
The film features Sanya Malhotra, Anant V Joshi, Vijay Raaz, Rajpal Yadav, Brijendra Kala, Neha Saraf and Raghubir Yadav. The story of the film revolves around a lost jackfruit and the police’s efforts to solve the crime.
It delivers powerful messages targeting the patriarchal ecosystem and caste-divided India. Netflix released Kathal on May 19, 2023.
Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar
Luv Ranjan directed Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar. Luv Films and T-Series Films produced it. Rahul Mody and Ranjan wrote the film. It stars Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor, alongside Dimple Kapadia and Anubhav Singh Bassi.
Boney Kapoor also makes his first screen appearance as an actor in the film. Monica Chaudhary, Inayat Verma, Hasleen Kaur, Jatinder Kaur, Amber Rana, Rajesh Jais and Ayesha Raza Mishra play supporting roles.
The plot for Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar revolves around Mickey, a carefree businessman and womaniser, who helps couples break up. But, things change for him when he falls for Tinni, a witty and beautiful chartered accountant.
The film had its theatrical release on March 8, 2023, and is now available to stream on Netflix. It grossed over USD 26 million worldwide, becoming the eighth-highest-grossing Hindi film of 2023.
