As part of yesterday’s Game Informer interview with Kingdom Hearts series director Tetsuya Nomura, details about the villains of the upcoming Kingdom Hearts IV and Sora’s inclusion in Smash Bros. were revealed.

Nomura spoke about how the new villain of Kingdom Hearts IV will have “a lot to do with the masked characters that appear at the end of Kingdom Hearts III.” The mentioned characters are the Foretellers, who first appeared in the mobile game Kingdom Hearts Union χ as prominent characters in the narrative. Though the mobile game has since been discontinued, it can still be downloaded as a “theater mode” in order to experience the important story scenes.
He then went on to say that fans should try Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, the forthcoming mobile game, when it comes out, as it will contain information and characters that will pertain to both Kingdom Hearts IV and the series as a whole. Missing-Link is set to have a closed beta test later this year.
Nomura also clarified that the many fans speculating that it was Disney that made Sora’s addition to Super Smash Bros. challenging are incorrect. It was Nomura himself who was picky about how Sora would be included and how that might clash with the established lore of the series, while Disney was allegedly completely on-board with Sora being a DLC fighter.

Kingdom Hearts IV sees Sora awaken in the world of Quadratum following the events of Kingdom Hearts III, as his friends continue to search for him. It will be the first entry of the “Lost Master” arc — a follow-up to the “Dark Seeker” saga of previous games. There is currently no release date for the game.
