While an Encanto sequel to Disney’s latest hit animated musical filmhas not been announced as of yet, Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda does believe there is more to explore regarding the Madrigal family.

Miranda — who wrote the songs for the film — recently spoke about a potential Encanto sequel and said it is a matter of “when and not if” in terms of coming together, even if it’s not another direct movie.
“I do think there’s an appetite to further explore the Madrigal family, given how many characters there are, and how many gifts there are,” Miranda told Collider. “And also where we leave the story. Now there is sort of this more fully realized version of themselves. Which way can we go? I think it’s a question of when and not if, and what form that will take. Is that another movie? Is that a series? Is that a stage adaptation where we have a little more time because stage shows are generally an hour longer than movies? And we haven’t had conversations as to what form that will take, but I mean, yeah, I’d be down to continue to explore that. I love writing for Dolores and Camilo. I’d love to write more for them. I’d love to write more for Isabela. So I’m not sure what the next form of that will be, but we haven’t had specific conversations about it’s this or it’s this.”
While a sequel isn’t in the works as of now, it does seem likely that one could pop up in the future. Encanto was a massive hit for Disney and all involved, with the film recently being nominated for Best Animated Feature, Best Original Score, and Best Original Song at the 94th Academy Awards.

Disney’s Encanto features a voice cast led by Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, In the Heights) as Mirabel, an ordinary 15-year-old who’s struggling to find her place in her family. Joining her are María Cecilia Botero as Abuela, Wilmer Valderrama as Agustin, Adassa as Dolores, Diane Guerrero as Isabela, Mauro Castillo as Felix, Angie Cepeda as Julieta, Jessica Darrow as Luisa, Rhenzy Feliz as Camilo, Carolina Gaitan as Pepa, and Ravi Cabot-Conyers as Antonio.
Encanto is directed by Zootopia helmers Byron Howard and Jared Bush from a screenplay co-written by Bush with co-director Charise Castro Smith. The film features all-new songs by Miranda (Moana) including an original song titled “Colombia, Mi Encanto,” performed by Latin Grammy winner Carlos Vives. It is produced by Clark Spencer and Yvett Merino.
