According to Variety, Oscar nominee Riz Ahmed through his Left Handed Films has officially partnered up with Lulu Wang for the development of a brand new comedy series titled The Son of Good Fortune, based on Lysley Tenorio’s coming-of-age novel of the same name. The project is produced by Amazon Studios and is being developed for Amazon Prime Video.

The Son of Good Fortune centers around an undocumented Filipino teenager in the Bay area as he tries to navigate a tumultuous relationship with his former B-movie action star mother, falling in love for the first time, and working out how to pay back a massive debt before his whole life crumbles.

The comedy series will be written and executive produced by Filipino-Korean writer and actor Andrew Lopez. It will be executive produced by Ahmed and Allie Moore for Left Handed as part of the company’s first-look TV deal with Amazon, along with Wang and Dani Melia for Local Time. Tenorio is also attached as a consulting producer.

This marks Ahmed’s latest collaboration with Amazon Studios after previously working together in last year’s acclaimed drama Sound of Metal which won two Oscars for Best Sound and Best Film Editing. He will next be seen in the sci-fi thriller Encounter which will be available for streaming on December 10 on Amazon Prime Video.
Wang is best known for directing the acclaimed 2019 comedy-drama film The Farewell, which starred Awkwafina. She is also currently executive producing the series adaptation of The Expatriates for Amazon which will be led by Nicole Kidman.
