It’s been three years since Oscar nominee Alex Garland stepped behind the camera for the film world and now he’s making his way back to the feature world as he’s set his next project, Men, at A24 with Jessie Buckley (I’m Thinking of Ending Things) and Rory Kinnear (Penny Dreadful) in talks to star, according to Deadline.

The film, on which Garland will both write and direct, centers on a young woman who goes on a solo vacation to the English countryside following the death of her ex-husband. Sources report that Garland began putting together the project last year, meeting with various talent for the central role in the film that would become highly sought-after by rising stars in film before landing on Buckley and though her deal has yet to finalize, indications are that talks are in a positive direction and nearing a close. After choosing Buckley for the role, Garland quickly eyed Kinnear to expand his cast.
The project is being produced by Scott Rudin, who has previously produced his other feature projects and FX miniseries Devs, alongside Eli Bush and DNA’s Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich, with A24 set to finance and distribute the film.

Men will also mark Garland’s reunion with the acclaimed indie production company behind it with whom he previously worked on his feature directorial debut, the Oscar-winning Ex Machina in 2014. The 50-year-old writer/director followed it up with the 2018 adaptation of the sci-fi horror novel Annihilation for Paramount Pictures which, despite flopping at the box office, received rave reviews from critics.
