A new showrunner has been hired for A24’s Friday the 13th prequel series.
Originally announced in 2022, Crystal Lake is a Friday the 13th prequel series being made for Peacock by A24. The series originally tapped Bryan Fuller as showrunner; however, Fuller left the project in May 2024. At that time, it was assumed that the series was dead.
Per Deadline, the show is moving forward once again as It: Welcome to Derry’s Brad Caleb Kane will now serve as the showrunner for Crystal Lake.
Kane said in a statement, “From the moment I watched Jason Voorhees squeeze a guy’s eyeball out of its socket (in glorious 3D!) at the tender age of 8 years old, I knew my creative path was someday destined to converge with The Man Behind The Mask. Nothing defined my childhood more than growing up in the golden age of the slasher flick, and nothing’s defined the genre more than Friday The 13th. I couldn’t be more excited for the opportunity to contribute a chapter to this iconic franchise, particularly with such fearless partners as Peacock and A24.”
What else do we know about the Friday the 13th prequel series?
Plot details remain under wraps at this time. Kane will executive producer alongside Victor Miller, Marc Toberoff, Robert M. Barsamian, and Robert P. Barsamian.
Along with being a co-showrunner on the new It: Welcome to Derry series alongside Jason Fuchs, Kane previously worked on television series such as Fringe, Black Sails, Lodge 49, Warrior, Tokyo Vice, and more.
There have been 12 films in the Friday the 13th franchise thus far, including 1980’s Friday the 13th, 1981’s Friday the 13th Part 2, 1982’s Friday the 13th Part III, 1984’s Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, 1985’s Friday the 13th: A New Beginning, 1986’s Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, 1988’s Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, 1989’s Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, 1993’s Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday, 2002’s Jason X, 2003’s Freddy vs. Jason, and 2009’s Friday the 13th.
