WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio and his son, Dominik Mysterio, are the first father-son tag team champions in WWE history. In 2021, they became the WWE SmackDown tag team champions at WrestleMania Backlash.
Dominik Mysterio debuted in WWE in 2020 as a fresh-faced babyface primarily known as Rey Mysterio’s son. Always in the shadow of the legendary luchador, Dominik struggled to establish his own identity. However, in 2022, his career took a dramatic turn.
Dominik Mysterio stunned the fans at Clash at the Castle in 2022 when he betrayed both Edge and his father, Rey Mysterio. This shocking heel turn marked a pivotal moment in Dominik’s career, transforming him into a compelling villain. Furthermore, since joining The Judgment Day, he has flourished as a solo star.
However, the intense fan animosity towards him is undeniable. Mysterio often finds himself drowned out by a chorus of boos, making it challenging to hear his voice even with a microphone in hand.
Dirty Dom is now regarded as one of the top heels in WWE. His transformation from a straight babyface to a leading heel in WWE is commendable. Recently, Dominik Mysterio addressed the ongoing comparisons to Rey Mysterio. He talked about whether he still feels like being in Rey Mysterio’s shadow.
Dominik Mysterio says he never felt like he was in his father’s shadow
Dominik Mysterio recently appeared on ESPN Dayton to discuss various topics. When asked whether he still feels overshadowed by his father, he explained that he never viewed it that way.
He stated, “I never really looked at it as like being in his shadow, it was almost just like I knew what had to be done and the path straight ahead and I just kind of kept my head down and kept working. I didn’t really focus about filling in his shoes … I never really focused too much on him being kind of like my ball and chain, kind of holding me down a little bit. The company having the trust in me to main event, I was the first person to main event ‘SmackDown,’ ‘NXT’ and ‘Raw’ all in the same week, so like things like that I don’t really like think about it because life is just moving so fast.”
Over the years, WWE has shown faith in Dirty Dom’s potential. It will be interesting to see when WWE decides to put a singles title on him. Although he has captured the NXT North American Title, he has yet to win a major singles title on the main roster.
