HBO has finally dropped the official teaser trailer for the upcoming second season of Danny McBride’s hit comedy series The Righteous Gemstones, teasing the return of everyone’s favorite mega-rich religious family. The series is scheduled to make its return on January 9, more than two years since the series wrapped up its first nine-episode debut season in 2019.
The video provides us our first preview of what to expect in the new season including Jesse’s plan of taking over their empire from his aging father. It also teases the introduction of new characters such as Eric Andre’s Lyle Lissons, a megachurch pastor from Texas who befriends Jesse.

The Righteous Gemstones is led by Danny McBride, who also serves as the creator, writer, and director of the series. The series also stars John Goodman as Eli Gemstone, Adam DeVine as Kelvin Gemstone, Edi Patterson as Judy Gemstone, Tony Cavalero as Keefe Chambers, Cassidy Freeman as Amber Gemstone, Skyler Gisondo as Gideon Gemstone, Walton Goggins as Billy Freeman, Greg Alan Williams as Martin Imari, Tim Baltz as BJ Barnes and more.
“The series tells the story of a world-famous televangelist family with a long tradition of deviance, greed, and charitable work,” reads the synopsis. “Well into the second generation of a grand televangelist tradition, the renowned Gemstone family is living proof that worship pays dividends in all sizes, including their megachurch. Season 2 of the comedy series finds our blessed Gemstone family threatened by outsiders from both the past and present who wish to destroy their empire.”
Season 2 will also feature Eric Andre (Bad Trip), Jason Schwartzman (Mozart in the Jungle), and Oscar nominee Eric Roberts (Runaway Train) for the recurring roles of Lyle Lissons, Thaniel, and Junior, respectively.
