Comedian, actor, and director Bo Burnham is releasing a brand new special in 2021, but it will very much be a product of 2020. Filmed inside his home without a crew or an audience over the course of the pandemic year, the aptly named Inside will premiere on Netflix before the year is out.

Announced out of the blue via social media, this special is a truly unique one-man show premiering on a big stage. Fans immediately asked Bo how he captured the included clip himself, and he responded that it was actually footage from his last special repurposed for the trailer. In that way, viewers only get a brief glimpse into what’s in store for them when the final product arrives on Netflix.

Inside will be Burnham’s fifth stand-up special, following directly on from 2016’s Make Happy. The former YouTube has also directed two stand-up specials for other comedians in the intervening years as well as directing his own feature film (Eighth Grade) and appearing in a prominent role in the Oscar-nominated Promising Young Woman.

Inside joins a small but historically significant genre of pandemic programming that will serve as a time capsule for our current moment in time. Most famously, The Office star John Krasinski started up a news show on YouTube filled with happy stories that he eventually spun into a production deal with ViacomCBS. Cable networks also produced makeshift Zoom versions of some of their shows while premiering new concepts that could work with long-distance acting via computer screens.
