According to Deadline, Brendan Fraser has just been cast as Robotman/Cliff Steele in the upcoming DC Universe live-action series Doom Patrol.
Per the report, Steele, a former race car driver, “was in a horrific accident that left his body uninhabitable. Cliff’s brain was saved by the mysterious Dr. Niles Caulder and he lives on in a powerful robotic body.”
Fraser, who was last seen in the low budget film The Secret of Karma (aside from television roles on Condor and Trust), will voice Robotman and appear in flashbacks as Steele. Actor Riley Shanahan, meanwhile, is set to don the Robotman costume and will act out the character’s onstage physical performance.
The casting of Frasier comes on the heels of another recent addition to the project, namely Joivan Wade, who will play Victor Stone, aka Cyborg.
Doom Patrol is a re-imagining of one of DC’s most beloved group of outcast Super Heroes: Robotman, Negative Man, Elasti-Girl, and Crazy Jane, led by modern-day mad scientist Dr. Niles Caulder (The Chief). The Doom Patrol’s members each suffered horrible accidents that gave them superhuman abilities – but also left them scarred and disfigured. Traumatized and downtrodden, the team found purpose through The Chief, who brought them together to investigate the weirdest phenomena in existence — and to protect Earth from what they find.
Part support group, part Super Hero team, the Doom Patrol is a band of super-powered freaks who fight for a world that wants nothing to do with them. Picking up after the events of Titans, Doom Patrol will find these reluctant heroes in a place they never expected to be, called to action by none other than Cyborg, who comes to them with a mission hard to refuse, but with warning that is hard to ignore: their lives will never, ever be the same.
The Doom Patrol characters will appear in the fifth episode of Berlanti’s DC Universe live-action drama Titans, with Bruno Bichir, April Bowlby, Jack Michaels, and Dwain Murphy starring. The direct-to-series order of 13 episodes will be written by Supernatural‘s Jeremy Carver and will be executive produced by Berlanti, Geoff Johns, Jeremy Carver, and Sarah Schechter.
