Star of The Mayor, Brandon Micheal Hall, toplining Greg Berlanti’s new CBS drama, God Friended Me
CBS’ new drama pilot, God Friended Me, has found its lead in Brandon Micheal Hall, best known for starring in ABC’s sitcom, The Mayor, which debuted on the network last fall.
Executive producer Greg Berlanti’s new drama will explore the questions of faith, existence, and science in what is described as a humorous and uplifting drama about an outspoken atheist, Miles (Hall), whose life is turned upside down when he is “friended” by God on Facebook. Unwittingly, he becomes an agent of change in the lives and destinies of others around him.
Gotham’s Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt, the duo behind Fox’s TV series Alcatraz, wrote the script for God Friended Me. The two are also serving as executive producers alongside Berlanti and Berlanti Productions’ Sarah Schechter. The Warner Bros. Television pilot will be directed by executive producer Marcos Siega.
ABC pulled The Mayor from the network’s schedule last month, though according to The Hollywood Reporter, the show is “being shopped by producers ABC Studios to other outlets.” The series had a difficult time drawing an audience despite good reviews and an aggressive marketing campaign from ABC. With Hall being in the first position for CBS’ God Friended Me, his casting would likely stem any future hope for The Mayor finding a new home elsewhere.
Greg Berlanti is known for producing The CW superhero dramas The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow (which he created), Riverdale, Black Lightning, as well as ABC’s Deception, Lifetime’s You, and Blindspot on NBC. He also wrote one episode of Titans, which is currently in preproduction.
