The five-part HBO miniseries Chernobyl is set to begin filming next spring in Lithuania. It will tell the true story of the one of the worst man-made catastrophes in history, and those who sacrificed themselves to save Europe from the event. Chernobyl will be produced by Kary Antholis, President, HBO Miniseries and CINEMAX Programing.

Jared Harris will play Valery Legasov, the Soviet scientist chosen by the Kremlin to investigate the accident. Chernobyl is written by Craig Mazin (The Huntsman: Winter’s War) and directed by Johan Renck (Breaking BadThe Walking Dead). It will be executive produced by Caroline Strauss, Jane Featherstone and Mazin, and co-executive produced by Chris Fry and Renck. This will be the first production between HBO and Sky Television.

“From the moment Craig Mazin pitched us the story, we were convinced that this all-too-true tale of horror and redemption needed to be told,” said Antholis. “It will engage — and enrage — our viewers, as well as audiences around the world.”

The miniseries is a tale of lies and cowardice, of courage and conviction, of human failure and human nobility. The miniseries focuses on the heartbreaking scope of the nuclear plant disaster that occurred in Ukraine in April 1986, revealing how and why it happened, and telling the shocking, remarkable stories of the heroes who fought and fell.

Jared Harris is known for his work in the Netflix original series The Crown, in which he played King George IV, Fringe, where he played David Robert Jones, and the films Mr. Deeds and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
