NBC picks up For God and Country and Rise to series
Rise and For God and Country have been picked up to series by NBC, according to Deadline. Former How I Met Your Mother star Josh Radnor plays the lead role in Rise, which is based on the book Drama High, written by Michael Sokolove about his high school drama teacher Lou Volpe. Volpe is known for moving to the blue collar town of Levittown, Pennsylvania and inspiring the students there with productions of sometimes controversial musicals and plays that kids could relate to.
The show comes to us from Friday Night Lights executive producer / showrunner Jason Katims and Hamilton producer Jeffrey Seller. Radnor will play Lou Mazzuchelli, who is a drama teacher, father of three and an English teacher in Pennsylvania. He decides to take over the drama department of a high school and changes the lives of his students.
The cast of Rise includes Shannon Purser (Stranger Things), Rosie Perez (White Men Can’t Jump, The View), Marley Shelton (Planet Terror), Auli’i Cravalho (Moana) and Rarmian Newton (The Family, Dance Academy). Katims will produce with Michelle Lee through True Jack Productions, with Seller and Flody Suarez for Seller Suarez Productions.
For God and Country stars Mike Vogel (Cloverfield) and Anne Heche (Six Days Seven Nights) and looks at the world of the military, and the sacrifices they make behind enemy lines. The show is written by Dean Georgaris who will executive produce For God and Country with Keshet’s Avi Nir, Peter Traugott and Rachel Kaplan.
