Jane the Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez will voice Carmen Sandiego for the Netflix series
Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez has just signed on to star in the upcoming Carmen Sandiego series for Netflix, according to The Tracking Board. Criminal mastermind Carmen Sandiego was the star of a number of games, working against the ACME Detective Agency as the head of V.I.L.E. The games taught kids geography and history, math and English. The character has appeared in books and other products as well. Carmen is a thief and and considers her crimes to be a game. She was also part of the ’90s children’s game show Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?. The show famously had the a cappella band Rockapella as their house band. They performed the famous theme song “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?.” Netflix has yet to confirm the series.
Creator David Siefkin originally based Carmen Sandiego on Portuguese-Brazilian actress Carmen Miranda. The show is rumored to have a 20-episode order from Netflix and will reportedly be educational as well as entertaining. Rodriguez will still be able to film the fourth season of Jane the Virgin, and do a feature film in her time off.
Rodriguez has won a Golden Globe for her work on Jane the Virgin, the show for which she’s become known. She’s also been part of the film Deepwater Horizon, where she played a deepwater technician, Filly Brown, Interstate and Sticky Notes. She played the role of Beverly on the soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful from 2011 to 2012.
