Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s Rachel Bloom wrote a song for The Flash musical episode
With The Flash and Supergirl set to crossover for a special musical episode, the series’ executive producers have reached across the aisle at The CW for some help. BuzzFeed has confirmed that Crazy Ex-Girlfriend creator and star Rachel Bloom has written one of the songs that will be performed by Grant Gustin and Melissa Benoist in the upcoming crossover.
“As soon as I heard that they were doing a musical crossover, I e-mailed Mark Pedowitz who connected me to Greg and Andrew. I immediately offered them my services,” Bloom said in a statement. “As soon as they picked one of my song ideas, I hopped on the phone with my old Robot Chicken boss Tom Root and we brainstormed and, based on that brainstorm, I wrote up the song ‘Super Friends’ I am so excited to contribute more to the upward trend that is musicals in television and film. Music can be one of the most amazing and efficient forms of storytelling and character development. Also, it was really fun to write a comedy song for two superheroes.”
In addition, The CW has confirmed that the Oscar/Tony/Emmy-nominated songwriting team of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (Dear Evan Hansen) have written a song for the episode titled “Runnin’ Home to You,” which will be performed by Gustin in the episode.
The crossover episode is set to begin on the Monday, March 20 episode of Supergirl where it will officially kick off at the end of the episode and lead into the Tuesday, March 21 episode of The Flash, appropriately titled “Duet.” Title heroes Grant Gustin and Melissa Benoist are confirmed to have singing parts in the episode along with Jesse L. Martin, Victor Garber, John Barrowman, Jeremy Jordan and Carlos Valdes. In addition, Darren Criss is set to star in the role of Music Meister, reuniting Gustin as the pair previously appeared in Glee together.
Dermott Downs has been tapped to direct the episode, having previously helmed a number of episodes of The Flash, Arrow, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.
