FX Productions has signed Atlanta creator and Golden Globe Award winner Donald Glover to an exclusive overall television production deal, it was announced jointly today by Nick Grad and Eric Schrier, Presidents of Original Programming, FX Networks and FX Productions.
Under the overall deal, Glover will develop television series for FX Networks and other networks and streaming services, in addition to continuing to executive produce, write, direct and star in Atlanta.
“Donald is a remarkable artist, effortlessly shifting from actor to writer, producer, director and musician to create one amazing project after another,” Grad said. “’Atlanta’ was just the beginning, the breakout comedy of the year and a series revered as much for its originality as its honest look at the experience of being aspiring, young and black in that legendary city. We’re proud to partner with Donald in an overall deal that will allow him to continue turning his creative vision into incredible television.”
Also today, FX announced that Glover’s award-winning hit comedy series Atlanta will return for a second season in 2018 due to Donald’s production schedule on the Han Solo movie and possibly other projects.
The first season of Atlanta won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy, and Glover was honored for Best Performance By an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy. Glover also won the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, and he was recently nominated for a WGA Award and DGA Award.
Atlanta was basic cable’s most-watched new comedy in three years in Adults 18-49 and the highest-rated comedy in FX Networks’ history, averaging 4.84 million Total Viewers across all linear and non-linear platforms. In year-end critics’ polls, Atlanta received the most #1 rankings of any comedy or new show.
