The DCU Lanterns series has been given a straight-to-series order from HBO.
Warner Bros. Discovery has announced that HBO, in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios, has given Lanterns a straight-to-series order. It will consist of eight episodes.
What is Lanterns’ official logline?
“The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland,” the synopsis reads.
Chris Mundy (True Detective: Night Country, Ozark) will serve as showrunner and executive producer on Lanterns. Damon Lindelof (The Leftovers, Watchmen) and Tom King (Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow) are co-writing the series with Mundy and also serve as executive producers.
No casting information has yet been announced at this time.
“We’re thrilled to bring this seminal DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon and Tom at the helm,” said James Gunn and Peter Safran, co-chairmen and co-CEOs of DC Studios, in a statement. “John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and Lanterns brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with Superman.”
Casey Bloys, the chairman and CEO of HBO and Max content, added, “We are elated to be reuniting with both Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof as they partner with Tom for this fresh take on DC’s Green Lantern. As part of James and Peter’s vision for the DC Universe, this first new live-action series will mark an exciting new era.”
A release date for Lanterns has not yet been set. The DCU officially kicks off later this year with an animated Creature Commandos series before Gunn’s Superman is released in theaters on July 11, 2025.
