One Piece’s Iñaki Godoy says he’s ready to play Monkey D. Luffy for “many years.”
Speaking with Teen Vogue, Godoy opened up about his career and what it was like playing Monkey D. Luffy in the first season of Netflix’s live-action One Piece series.
While Godoy noted he’s hoping to play a number of different roles in Hollywood as the years go on — including “someone who is horrible and who loves being horrible” — he also said he’s fully committed to portraying Monkey D. Luffy for as long as he can.
“I can do One Piece for many years and I can be happy, and I don’t need to do a million things,” he said.
Godoy also said about playing Monkey D. Luffy, “I had to understand that I’m playing a character who is unlike anything I’ve ever played, someone who is extraordinary, someone who has a capability of making people follow him anywhere he goes, someone who follows his dreams, who trusts his gut, and who doesn’t care what others think…The moving thing about Luffy is that he doesn’t really change too much. Instead, he changes the world around him with his way of being.”
More of Netflix’s live-action One Piece is in the works
An adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s manga series of the same name, the first season of One Piece was released on Netflix in August 2023. The series was developed by Matt Owens and Steven Maeda, while Oda serves as a creative consultant.
Along with Godoy, the series stars Emily Rudd as Nami, Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp, Taz Skylar as Sanji, Vincent Regan as Monkey D. Garp, Jeff Ward as Buggy the Clown, and Morgan Davies as Koby.
Netflix announced that a second season of One Piece is in the works in September 2023, though a release date has not yet been set. The first season, meanwhile, is currently streaming.
