Mr. & Mrs. Smith co-creator Francesca Sloane offered an update on the possibility of a Season 2 after the show’s open-ended conclusion, revealing that there are ideas to continue the Prime Video series.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sloane addressed the open-ended nature of the finale, saying: “We wanted to make sure that it felt like a complete story, even with the ending being what it is. We watched a lot of films from the ’70s. I love the way that a lot of films then ended. The Graduate has one of those endings that still feels satisfying without giving you everything. We feel like there’s a beautiful complete story here in that sense.”
She continued: “That said, we have definitely already started discussing ideas for Season 2 . . . in the world we make one. We would never want to make a Season 2 if we couldn’t kick our own asses, in terms of taking down season one. So it really depends. We’ll see what life has to offer us, but we definitely have some exciting thoughts.”
Sloane, who previously worked with co-creator and star Donald Glover on Atlanta, added that there will be another writer in the mix for a potential Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 2: “It really depends on how everything is received. Of course, while you’re in the muck of making something this difficult, you really don’t even let yourself fantasize about the future. It just about trying to get to the end. But now that we’ve all done it, it’s sort of like childbirth. I love the baby! So, there are talks of season two and we have some really cool ideas for it — I’m collaborating with Donald and Taofik Kolade, who wrote on Atlanta with us. He’s incredible and I think he’d be a great addition in terms of voice . . . if we do go forward with it. We’ll see.”
What is Mr. & Mrs. Smith about?
“Meet the Smiths: Two strangers, John and Jane, who have given up their identities to be thrown together as partners — in espionage and in marriage,” reads an official description. “Matched by a mysterious agency, each episode follows them on a new mission and new milestone in their relationship. When the cracks begin to show through, they must fight to stay together. Because in this marriage, divorce is not an option.”
Along with leads Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, the guest cast includes Alexander Skarsgård, Sarah Paulson, Ron Perlman, Eiza Gonzalez, Sharon Horgan, Ursula Corbero, Billy Campbell, Paul Dano, Michaela Coel, John Turturro, Parker Posey, and Wagner Moura.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith is created and executive produced by Glover (Swarm, Atlanta) and Sloane (Atlanta, Fargo). New Regency’s Yariv Milchan and Michael Schaefer also executive produce. It hails from Amazon Studios.
All episodes are now on Prime Video.
