Marvel’s What If…? head writer and showrunner A.C. Bradley recently revealed that the team behind the show scrapped a “dark” Spider-Man episode.
In a recent talk with IGN, Bradley revealed that there was a “very, very dark” script that was written around Spider-Man during the COVID-19 pandemic (in which most of Season 2 was written). She likened the script to the iconic 2006 dystopian thriller Children of Men.
“It felt like the world was already ending and we didn’t need to add to it,” Bradley said. “And so it became kind of an escape and a fun release. However, I did write an episode, which is forever going in a drawer, that was very, very dark. I was calling it ‘Children of Men with Spider-Man.’”
It’s unclear just how the episode would’ve involved the story of Children of Men — which sees a world in which humans have struggled with infertility for two decades, and on the brink of collapse — but it looks like fans will forever have to theorize on what could have been.
What is Marvel’s What If…? Season 2 about?
“The Watcher continues the journey as our guide through the vast multiverse, introducing brand-new and familiar faces throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe,” reads the Season 2 synopsis. “The animated anthology series questions, revisits and twists classic Marvel Cinematic moments with an incredible voice cast that includes a host of stars who reprise their iconic roles.”
What If…? hails from head writer AC Bradley and director Bryan Andrew, who are both serving as executive producers. While Season 1 covered events from the Infinity Saga, Season 2 is expected to adapt stories and feature characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 4. The series is led by Jeffrey Wright as the voice of The Watcher.
