Award-winning actor Andre Braugher — known for his role as Captain Raymond Holt on Fox and NBC’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine — has died. He was 61 years old.
According to Deadline, Braugher passed away on Monday, December 11 following a “brief illness.” Braugher leaves behind his wife, fellow actor Ami Brabson; their sons, Michael, Isaiah, and John Wesley; his brother, Charles Jennings; and his mother, Sally Braugher. He also leaves behind agent Brandt Joel, attorney Keith Klevan, and publicist Jennifer Allen, who have represented him for 25 years.
Braugher was born in Chicago on July 1, 1962. He graduated from Stanford University with a BA in theatre in 1984. Braugher subsequently graduated from the Juilliard School in 1988. He then made his big-screen debut as Cpl. Thomas Searles in director Edward Zwick’s 1989 Civil War film Glory.
Braugher went on to star as Detective Frank Pembleton on NBC’s 1993-1998 police drama Homicide: Life on the Street. (Brabson co-starred as his on-screen wife, Mary Pembleton). His performance earned him an NAACP Image Award, a Satellite Award, two TCA Awards, and a Primetime Emmy Award. Braugher later added a second Primetime Emmy to his shelf thanks to his role as Nick Atwater in the 2006 FX miniseries Thief.
In 2013, Braugher began playing Raymond Holt on the aforementioned police comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The show concluded in 2021 after eight seasons. Along the way, he picked up two Critics’ Choice Television Awards.
Some of Braugher’s other notable roles include Owen Thoreau Jr. on Men of a Certain Age, Woodchuck Coodchuck-Berkowitz on BoJack Horseman, Darkseid in Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, and General Hager in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.
