Speaking with EW, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew creator Christopher Ford explained the reason why the upcoming Star Wars series perfectly fits into The Mandalorian timeline. Ford revealed that setting the series during New Republic era allowed them to create a coming-of-age age story in which the kid characters can be able to freely explore the galaxy without the restrictions of the Empire.
“For us it was a great era because as much as the New Republic are trying to bring things back [to peace], it’s kind of a lawless wild time, so there’s a lot of danger,” Ford said. “If we had set it earlier the kids might’ve just met the Empire and got shut down. This is more of the galaxy to get lost in.”
What to Expect in Skeleton Crew?
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is created and executive produced by Jon Watts and scribe Christopher Ford, who previously worked together on Spider-Man: Homecoming. The series will be led by Jude Law as a mysterious Jedi. Joining him are Kerry Condon, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Kyriana Kratter, Robert Timothy Smith, and Tunde Adebimpe.
The series will take place during the events after Return of the Jedi. Inspired by the classic Amblin films of the 80s, the project previously had the working title of Grammar Rodeo, which is a nod to a Simpsons episode featuring Bart running away for a week with a stolen car.
It is also executive produced by Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, and Kathleen Kennedy. Episodes are directed by Watts, Jake Schreier, Lee Isaac Chung, Bryce Dallas Howard, and David Lowery along with Everything Everywhere All at Once filmmaking duo Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert.
