Ariel Animated Series Announced, Inspired by Live-Action The Little Mermaid

Disney has greenlit a new animated series for young children based on The Little Mermaid, according to Variety.

When does The Little Mermaid animated series come out?

The news comes out of the ongoing 2023 Annecy Animation Festival. Titled Disney Junior’s Ariel, the series is set to feature a young Ariel and her adventures with some of the more iconic characters from The Little Mermaid. These will include King Triton, Ursula, Sebastian and Flounder.

Similar to other early childhood programming, the series see Ariel exploring the world around her and solving problems with items she finds. Variety specifically reports that while making discoveries, Ariel’s tail will also change colors, and can change depending on her emotions. This will likely factor into the show as a way to teach children as well.

“As we were developing Disney Junior’s Ariel, we knew that we wanted to create an atmosphere that was vibrant and magical and showcased our young Ariel’s imagination, which, like our preschool audience watching at home, is as big as the sea,” added Alyssa Sapire, senior vice president of development, series and strategy for Disney Junior.

“Full of charm, big ideas and a powerful voice, Disney Junior’s Ariel is coming into her own, learning how to discover and appreciate the world around her and use her voice to inspire others,” reads the official synopsis for the series.
