The latest addition to Apple TV+’s commendable library of thriller titles, Surface tells the story of Sophie (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), who has lost her memories after a failed suicide attempt. Seeing that she has also forgotten why she took the drastic decision of killing herself in the first place, Sophie embarks on a perilous journey to uncover the cause behind it. Though there are a few who come forward to aid her, she soon realizes that neither recovering her memories nor relying on those who claim to care for her is going to be an easy task.

Though Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s performance in the series has been lauded, the clichéd storyline has been derided for its predictability.

“Surface is a slick psychological thriller that gets bogged down later in the season as it tries to sustain the myriad twists and turns,” writes Emma Fraser of The Playlist.
