The report from The Hollywood Reporter notes that the series will debut on HBO Max sometime in 2023 and that HBO Max has also acquired all of the U.S. rights to all 14 seasons of Degrassi: The Next Generation, and will begin streaming the series later this year in the spring.
As for the new Degrassi series, Lara Azzopardi (The Bold Type) and Julia Cohen (Riverdale) will serve as showrunners and executive producers for the upcoming series. Filming is set to begin later this year in Toronto, Canada, with WildBrain — the company that owns the Degrassi franchise — set to produce the series as well.
“Series after series, the Degrassi franchise continues to make an indelible impact on young viewers looking for trustworthy and authentic storytelling,” said Amy Friedman, head of kids and family programming at Warner Bros. “WildBrain continues to artfully capture high school life in a compelling format that can be experienced seamlessly on HBO Max.”

According to the report, the new series will continue in its predecessor’s footsteps, and follow a group of teenagers and school faculty while going through their day-to-day lives. The Degrassi franchise began in 1980 and has had a variety of spin-off series, including Degrassi: The Next Generation, which debuted in 2001 and ran for 14 years and featured some notable stars, including rapper Drake and Nina Dobrev.
