During Saturday Night Live’s 47th season premiere this weekend, the comedy sketch series paid tribute to Norm Macdonald during a segment of Weekend Update.

Towards the end of Weekend Update’s segment on the show, hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che paid tribute to Macdonald by praising his work, with JOst saying that Macdonald was the reason that he wanted to do Weekend Update. The duo then turned things over to Macdonald and showed a variety of clips from Macdonald’s time as host of the show.
Macdonald passed away last month at the age of 61, following a private battle with cancer.

Macdonald famously was part of SNL from 1993 through 1998 and hosted its Weekend Update segment. He was controversially fired in 1998. Post SNL, Macdonald was a successful stand-up comedian, starred in The Norm Show, and appeared in The Middle in a recurring role. Most recently, Macdonald had a talk show on Netflix for one season called Norm Macdonald Has a Show.
