Variety brings word that a Hawkeye spinoff series is in early development at Disney+ with plans to center the story on Echo, a deaf Native American character. Echo, whose real name is Maya Lopez, is being played by Alaqua Cox in the streamer’s Hawkeye series starring Jeremy Renner in his MCU role. Etan Cohen and Emily Cohen are reportedly set to write and executive produce the project. According to the outlet, a writers’ room was recently assembled for the spinoff, which will be produced by Marvel Studios.
Echo is capable of perfectly duplicating any physical movement or action she sees thanks to her photographic reflexes and is an expert in various forms of martial arts, among other abilities. The character was created by writer David Mack and artist Joe Quesada, first appearing in Daredevil #9 in 1999. She was also the first person to hold the Ronin identity before it was passed on to Clint Barton.

The Hawkeye limited series will see Jeremy Renner reprising his role as Clint Barton, with the story also set to introduce his protege Kate Bishop, who is being portrayed by Hailee Steinfeld. Vera Farmiga, Fra Fee (Animals), and newcomer Alaqua Cox will also star along with Black Widow‘s Florence Pugh, Tony Dalton (Better Call Saul), and Zahn McClarnon (Doctor Sleep).
The series, which is currently in production, will be directed by Amber Finlayson and Katie Ellwood, aka Bert and Bertie, who are best known for their work on Troop Zero, and Rhys Thomas (Staten Island Summer). Hawkeye is expected to debut in Fall 2021 on Disney+.

The project’s working title “Anchor Point” is actually serving as a homage to the first volume of Kelly Thompson’s fan-favorite comic book series that was published in 2017. Titled as Vol.1: Anchor Points, it was Kate Bishop’s first solo comic series after appearing in the Young Avengers issues. However, it’s still unknown if the said comics’ storyline would connect to the series’ plot or not.
