After working with the Oscar-winning director on his beloved comedies What We Do in the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeeple, Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi are reuniting as the Jumanji star is set to lead the latter’s HBO Max series Our Flag Means Death, according to Deadline.

Created by showrunner David Jenkins (People of Earth), the period comedy is loosely based on the real-life adventures of Stede Bonnet, a well-to-do gentleman farmer from a wealthy family who, after undergoing a midlife crisis, elects to leave and become the captain of Revenge, a pirate ship in the early 18th century. Darby will lead the series as Bonnet.
Our Flag Means Death will be executive produced by Waititi, Jenkins, Garrett Basch (What We Do in the Shadows) and Dan Halsted, with the former set to direct the pilot for the series after the conclusion of filming on his second Marvel Cinematic Universe project, Thor: Love and Thunder, on which he is writing, directing and reprising his role of lovable sidekick Korg.

The series marks the fifth collaboration between Darby and Waititi, which began when the former starred in the cult favorite HBO series Flight of the Conchords, on which Waititi was a writer/director, and followed with What We Do in the Shadows, Hunt for the Wilderpeeple and the upcoming ensemble comedy sports biopic Next Goal Wins, in which he stars alongside Michael Fassbender (Dark Phoenix), Elisabeth Moss (The Invisible Man) and Armie Hammer (Death on the Nile).
