According to Variety, Paramount Television Studios is in the process of developing a series adaptation of author Jeffrey Eugenides’ best-selling coming-of-age novel titled Middlesex with Sam Taylor-Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey, A Million Little Pieces) attached to direct. This project marks the second time that the novel will be developed into series as HBO previously attempted to make the series adaptation back in 2002.

First published in 2002, the critically-acclaimed novel follows the story of Calliope “Cal” Stephanides and three generations of the Greek-American Stephanides family as they travel from their tiny village to Prohibition-era Detroit, eventually witnessing the race riots of 1967 before moving out to suburban Grosse Pointe, Michigan. Throughout the story, Cal tries to deal with his gender identity as he discovers that he is intersex which was caused by a genetic condition that runs through the family.

Since its debut, Jeffrey Eugenides’ novel had immediately gained critical-acclaimed for its portrayal of issues concerning immigrants and gender identity. It has currently sold over 4 million copies and had won the Pulitzer Prize Award for Fiction in 2002.

The Middlesex series will be written by House of Cards’ David Manson as part of his overall deal with the studio. At the moment, there is no network attached to the project.
Sam Taylor-Johnson is best known for directing Universal’s film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey which starred Jamie Dornan and Dakota Fanning. Despite receiving negative reviews, the film still went on to earned over $500 million at the worldwide box office. Taylor-Johnson’s other notable film credits include 2009’s John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy and 2019’s A Million Little Pieces which both starred her husband Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Avengers: Age of Ultron).
