With the recent confirmation of the Obi-Wan Disney+ series, we’re taking a look at some things we want to see and learn about the Jedi Master from his very own show. Take a look at our picks in the gallery below!
It goes without saying, the best thing about the Star Wars prequel trilogy was Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi. Over a decade has passed since seeing him on the silver screen as the beloved character. Since Disney’s acquisition of the Star Wars franchise and the implementation of new films and other projects, fans have held out hope that McGregor would return to the beloved role.
In the past, Ewan McGregor has been shy about whether he would return to the force. This is not to say that he hadn’t expressed interest in returning—leaving everyone to hope. Hope turned into prayers, and now those prayers have been answered. A series has been announced that will bridge the gap between McGregor’s portrayal and Alec Guinness.’ As we ponder the nature of the Disney+ series (taking place between Episodes III and IV), all the things about McGregor’s character we wanted more of in 2005 come to mind; Obi-Wan Kenobi has always been somewhat of a mystery—his backstory and motives seeming relatively stagnant (if not open to interpretation). Lucas’ films are no stranger to plot holes and missed opportunities. The following slideshow outlines some things we may (and hopefully will) learn about “Ben” Kenobi from the announced series.
Obi-Wan From a TV Series
-
His personality
Let's be honest, dialogue in the prequel trilogy wasn't great. Despite this, you could tell McGregor's Obi-Wan was bubbling with charisma. Hopefully we'll see more of this as well as some darker, more exploratory moments in the series.
-
His plan after episode III
So he leaves Anakins' offspring—one with a popular politician and the other with some relatives. Why? Also, why does one of the most important people in the galaxy at this point go into hiding instead of rallying a resistance?
-
How he really feels about the whole 'Vader' thing
Maybe there's a part of Obi-wan that always sensed the darkness in Anakin, maybe he even blames himself...
-
Why he chooses the name 'Ben'
In episode IV, Luke only knows Obi-Wan as "Old Ben." Just a minor detail that needs a little exposition—not like Ben Kenobi is vastly different than Obi-wan Kenobi.
-
More about his relationship with R2D2
Episode VI: "I don't remember owning a droid."
No, but you two know each other.
-
Why/how he disappears in Episode IV
After his second fight with Vader, he allows his fallen friend to gain the upper hand and 'defeat him.' Before Vader's saber ever touches Obi-Wan, he disappears. Perhaps the series will show us Obi-Wan learning about this ability or making it his contingency plan.
