The USA Network has ordered a Masters of Doom pilot, which details the making of one of the most iconic PC games in recent history: the first-person shooter, Doom.

Masters of Doom is the true story of two computer geniuses in an obscure corner of America, John Carmack and John Romero, best friends-turned-bitter rivals as they created a video game empire. The series’ first installment will be based on the non-fiction book by award-winning journalist and author David Kushner, who will also executive produce.

Masters of Doom, which heralds from Universal Content Productions (UCP), will be written and executive produced by Tom Bissell, who has written for video game franchises including Gears of War, Battlefield, and Uncharted, as well as authored nine books. Fellow executive producers include Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Eric Robinson and Jeremy Bell of The Gotham Group, James and Dave Franco (of course), Vince Jolivette and Elizabeth Haggard of Ramona Films. D.J. Goldberg of The Gotham Group will also serve as co-executive producer.

USA has had a string of high-profile scripted series making news of late, including Briarpatch from Mr. Robot’s Sam Esmail, Brave New World, a television adaptation of the iconic Aldous Huxley novel, and Dare Me, which is based on the award-winning young adult novel from Megan Abbott.

Doom was first introduced for PC consoles back in 1993 and has spawned more than a dozen sequels and spinoffs in the years since. The game even got turned into a 2005 film, which starred a pre-box office sensation Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Another feature film adaptation, Doom: Annihilation, was announced earlier this year.
