Following last month’s report on the cancellation of Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black, The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Lionsgate Television is currently having discussions with creator Jenji Kohan about the Emmy winning comedy drama’s potential sequel.
“We’re really proud of the long run that Orange Is the New Black had,” Lionsgate TV’ Group’s chairman Kevin Beggs said. “It remains one of Netflix’s most-watched shows. We’re ending on a high note. Keep in mind we own that series and will be distributing it for years to come. We’re already in discussions and, when the timing is right, we’ll talk further with Jenji about a potential sequel.”
Orange is the New Black is consists of an ensemble cast that includes Taylor Schilling, Laura Prepon, Natasha Lyonne, Uzo Aduba, Danielle Brooks, Jackie Cruz, Laura Gomez, Kate Mulgrew, Selenis Leyva, Taryn Manning, Adrienne C. Moore, Jessica Pimentel, Dascha Polanco, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Yael Stone, Laverne Cox and Dale Soules. Last 2016, the Lionsgate-produced series was picked up for three more seasons right before the fourth season premiere.

The show was based on Piper Kerman’s memoir of the same name. The first season had its debut on July 11, 2013 which earned many praises from the critics and viewers. It has also garnered 12 Emmy Nominations including Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy series.
Season 6 launched this year last July where It picks up right after the event of the fifth season, one week after the emergency response team stormed Litchfield Penitentiary, the ladies of Litch have been torn apart, literally and figuratively, as they enter a new facility in the sixth season of Orange Is The New Black. Now newbies, they must navigate new rules and power dynamics, starting at the bottom, and getting hazed by inmates and tortured by guards. Friendships will be tested and new allegiances formed — some by choice and others by circumstance — as the women face a slew of charges from the riot. Will they take plea deals and turn on each other or band together and keep their bonds intact?
The sixth season is available for streaming at Netflix while the series’ seventh and final season is scheduled to premiere in 2019.
