In the previous episode of HBO’s Insecure, Issa obsessed over Nathan while she worked on her block party. This season finale began with all of the rejections Issa was getting while trying to plan it.
Blackbuster Night
It was Issa’s 30th birthday, and Molly was taking her out for a surprise. They would be seeing The Last Dragon at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. The event was part of a larger showcase of classic black films that Tiffany’s friend Condola organized. In the face of so many rejections, Issa had decided to put her block party on hold. But after speaking with Condola, she was encouraged to be persistent, Issa gained the confidence and connections she would need to advance her idea. She also finally interviewed with Eli from The Beat Crew, who said he would see if there was a position available for her.
Just Want It to Be Easy
Lawrence and his friends were also at screening event. Chad was back together with his fiancée. Lawrence was shocked they’d gotten back together after Chad had cheated. Chad insisted that it was easier to grovel rather than start over with someone else. Lawrence visited Issa during the screening, as they shared a love for The Last Dragon. It seemed like Lawrence was considering getting back together with Issa, especially after a talk with his father. However, he went on a date with Condola after her meeting with Issa.
Partner and Alone
The partners at Molly’s firm wanted her to co-lead a new case with Taurean. However, since she had undercut him, he left the case for another project. Molly’s ambition was isolating her from her colleagues.
Molly told Issa that before she picked her up for the birthday surprise, Nathan had come to her apartment building with flowers. Molly had sent him away without telling Issa. Issa was upset, and she told Molly that she had been negative and always assumed the worst in people. Molly ended up calling Andrew and apologizing to him for assuming the worst in him and for being selfish.
M.I.A.
After Issa’s birthday, Nathan left the flowers at Issa’s door. She called him and invited him to talk. He explained that he was feeling bad about himself and had gone back to Houston to deal with personal things. Nathan didn’t want to put her through what he was feeling. He apologized for ghosting her and wished he had a better explanation for her. Issa told him she needed time to figure out what she wanted.
