In the previous episode of HBO’s Insecure, things were awkward with Issa staying at Daniel’s apartment. She was out of the field at her job and had a tough time as a Lyft driver. This next episode picks up with an apartment application rejection.
“No Wonder L.A. Got a Homeless Problem”
Issa went to see Kelli about her finances. She didn’t want to impose on Daniel for much longer. But with a low credit score and not enough saved for a few months’ rent, Kelli told Issa she wasn’t in the position to be moving out on her own yet. However, Issa did have a tentative lead for a property manager position.
She asked Daniel if she could stay a few weeks more. Daniel lied, citing his girlfriend Vanessa having a problem with it, and said she could only stay a week longer. To make her stay more palatable for Daniel, she cleaned and organized his apartment.
“I Don’t Want to Be the Voice of All Black People”
Issa and her coworkers workshopped We Got Y’all’s logo with Joanne. Whenever someone brought up the negative and tone-deaf connotations of it, Joanne got defensive. Her coworkers thought that Issa should have spoken up about the logo. Issa did not think it was fair for her to have that responsibility. But, she went to see Joanne and offered her help. She also pointed out that We Got Y’all should make a stronger effort to hire people of color since that is who they serve.
Hype Me Up
Daniel’s friend was supposed to take him to a club to meet a hip-hop artist named Spyder, but canceled last minute. Issa insisted on accompanying Daniel, who was reluctant to go by himself. At the club, Daniel wasn’t on the list, but they ran into Khalil, an old high school friend and successful music producer. He got them into the club where Spyder was performing on stage.
Later, Issa played wing-woman to Daniel by chatting with Khalil and providing an opening for Daniel to pitch to Spyder. Unfortunately, Spyder didn’t seem very interested, and the night was broken up by some gunshots in the club.
Sharing Chili Fries
Issa and Daniel went for food after the club. Daniel opened up about his insecurities. He had taught Khalil about music, but Khalil was more successful. Issa suggested Daniel ask to work with Khalil. She understood that it was hard to ask for help, pointing to how it was hard for her to ask Daniel to stay longer. Daniel said it was okay for her to stay. Later, Daniel called Khalil, and they agreed to meet up the next day.
Back at Daniel’s apartment, Issa got a voicemail about the property manager position, and they wanted to meet with her. She said nothing of it to Daniel. He had offered his bed up to her since he would be working late. Instead of going to bed, she sat with him while he played his music.
