Sweet Tooth stars Christian Convery and Naledi Murray believe the sophomore season of the Netflix series shares an important message about family and friendship. While talking with the young actors and the rest of the cast, ComingSoon asked about the evolution of their respective characters in the upcoming season. Convery and Murray were happy to describe what’s next for Gus and Wendy in Sweet Tooth Season 2, teasing they and the rest of the hybrids will have a lot on their plate as they’re looking for a safe place.
“As a deadly new wave of the Sick bears down, Gus (Christian Convery) and a band of fellow hybrids are held prisoner by General Abbot (Neil Sandilands) and the Last Men. Looking to consolidate power by finding a cure, Abbot uses the children as fodder for the experiments of captive Dr. Aditya Singh (Adeel Akhtar), who’s racing to save his infected wife Rani (Aliza Vellani),” reads the Sweet Tooth Season 2 synopsis.
“To protect his friends, Gus agrees to help Dr. Singh, beginning a dark journey into his origins and his mother Birdie’s (Amy Seimetz) role in the events leading up to The Great Crumble. Outside the Preserve, Tommy Jepperd (Nonso Anozie) and Aimee Eden (Dania Ramirez ) team up to break the hybrids free, a partnership that will be tested as Jepperd’s secrets come to light. As the revelations of the past threaten the possibility of redemption in the present, Gus and his found family find themselves on a collision course with Abbot and the evil forces that look to wipe them out once and for all.”
Tudor Leonte: Christian, a certain situation forces Gus to lie to his friends to hide that something happened. For the first time, he is forced to deal with tough decisions as a leader. How did your character evolve in the second season?
Christian Convery: He has grown up. From the first season, you’ve seen how he was just a little kid innocent and how he’s gone through all of these struggles and obstacles to get to the point where he has started Season 2. Like you said, he does lie, and that is a show that Gus is learning to essentially step up and knows that if this lie is discovered, then he could take the blame for it. It’s also Gus growing up, going through many things, and learning about the true cruelty that man can bring. I felt like I also grew as an actor alongside Gus and as a person.
Naledi Murray: The second season just shows that they’re willing to do what it takes to defend their family and defend hybrids.
Wendy tried to stop her friend from lying, but then she understood the situation, let’s put it like this. Can you please tell us something about the storyline and the relationship between Gas and Wendy?
Murray: Well, what I can say is once Wendy meets Gas, they really form a great connection, and they kind of become the leaders of the hybrids. They really stick up for all the hybrids and they just look out for them because they kind of become activists for all hybrids. They really make it their mission for them to all have a safe place, they really try.
Convery: Like Naledi was saying, she and I, in the story, we’re basically defending all of those hybrids, all one family. That’s an important message to take away from the show, finding and choosing your families.
