In the previous episode of HBO’s Watchmen, after Looking Glass set Angela up to confess to finding Judd with her grandfather, Angela took Will’s Nostalgia. In Watchmen Season 1 Episode 6, Angela experienced Will’s memories as Laurie Blake tried to get her out of the Nostalgia-induced coma.
Hooded Justice
Young Will Reeves joined the NYPD and immediately faced racism in his duties as a police officer. The black Lieutenant who pinned his badge on warned him of “the Cyclops”, so Will determined to track it down. Will arrested Fred for burning down a Jewish deli and learned that white officers conspired to let him go. They attacked Will and hung him. They cut him down, indicating it was a warning.
Using the hood that they put over his head and the noose that was around his neck, Will transformed himself into Hooded Justice, the first vigilante that inspired the Minutemen. American Hero Story, the show in the Watchmen universe depicting the Minutemen story, assumed that Hooded Justice had been a white man. Nelson Gardner, a.k.a. Captain Metropolis, had assumed that Will was a black police officer who informed Hooded Justice. When he invited Will to join the Minutemen, he learned the truth. Will and Nelson had an affair, also depicted in American Hero Story.
Cyclops
Will tracked down Fred to a market he owned. There, he found Klan members with maps marked with an eye and book about Mesmerism. The scene was in contrast with the American Hero Story scene introducing Hooded Justice shown earlier in the season.
At a movie theater, reminiscent of when Will was a child during the massacre, he investigated another massacre. When talking to witness, he realized that the audience had been mesmerized. Will found a warehouse that Fred owned. He shot and killed Fred and everyone inside. He learned of a Klan plot to mesmerize black people into killing each other. The eye symbol referred to the projectors. He burned down the warehouse with the bodies in it and took home a projector.
When Will came home, his son, Marcus, had dressed up like him. Will tried to wash off the makeup around Marcus’s eyes. June told Will that she and Marcus would be moving back to Tulsa, and he wasn’t to contact them.
The Truth
When Judd had come upon Will in a wheelchair, Will used a flashing flashlight to mesmerize Judd into hanging himself. He had seen the Klan robe in Judd’s closet. Judd had claimed it was his grandfather’s and part of his legacy.
Throughout the episode, Angela had been in a coma from the Nostalgia she took. Laurie tried to get her to consent to having her stomach pumped before succumbing to the pills. She had Cal read a statement to her, reminding Angela of her identity. At the end of the episode, Angela woke up with Lady Trieu at her bedside. She owned the company that made Nostalgia.
