This week’s Supergirl Season 4 Episode 20 sends Kara and Lena to Kaznia in order to uncover what Lex is up to. Meanwhile, Alex gets a call about a potential adoption, taking Kelly with her for moral support. With Haley in D.C. attempting to get Lockwood’s DEO clearance revoked, that leaves Brainy to hold down the fort as Lockwood takes his crusade against aliens to the next level.
Motherhood and Other Complications
Alex gets a call from the adoption agency. A 17 year old girl is going into labor. She kept her pregnancy a secret, so the standard protocols and timelines are tossed out the window. Alex has 12 hours to make it to the hospital where the baby will be born and adopt the child or not. Alex is terrified that she won’t be a good parent and that in spite of her own upbringing, that there’s no way she can handle motherhood on her own right now. Kelly goes along with Alex and advises her to listen to her heart and decide what to do.
Alex decides to adopt the child. She gets excited, looking at jogging strollers online and getting ready to be a mother. However, the birth mother changes her mind. At the last minute, she decides to keep the child, sending Alex into a spiral of pain and grief over breaking off her relationship with Maggie over the topic of adopting a child. Kelly shares her own pain over the loss of her fiance. Kelly helps Alex understand that while this hurts now, that hurt will fade and there will be more chances at love and at a family.
Fatherhood and Justice
George speaks at his mother’s funeral when his father gets up and walks out. At the DEO, Lockwood and his men go through Haley’s files, uncovering that Lena has been working out of a lab at the DEO. There, Lockwood discovers the raw Harun-El serum. Brainy explains that the dose James received that gave him his powers was precisely calibrated from a refined formula. The raw Harun-El would likely kill anyone injected with it.
The DEO gets a location on the alien that killed Lockwood’s wife. He and his men raid the safe house and arrest the murderer. Lockwood orders the rest of the aliens rounded up for interrogation on the grounds that they were harboring a killer. Brainy protests, stating that Lockwood is attempting to circumvent the Constitution in his crusade. The DEO agents stand down.
James and Dreamer arrive from the Fortress of Solitude, where they have been testing the limits of James’s powers. Lockwood injects himself with the Harun-El, overcoming the pair and Brainy. J’onn arrives and defeats Lockwood, warning Lockwood that he is setting himself up for his own ruin. When Lockwood tries to explain himself to George, his son tells Lockwood that all that has transpired, including the death of their wife and mother, is Lockwood’s fault.
Clones, Copies, and Secret Identities
Lena and Kara are shot out of the skies above Kaznia. Arriving at Lex’s military base, they discover that someone in the president’s staff has been moving DEO prisoners to Kaznia for Lex to experiment upon. Lex appears to be using Red Daughter to plan and eventually execute a Kaznian invasion of the United States. The two are tripped up by Eve, who confounds and confronts them as they attempt to escape the facility before it explodes.
During the escape, Kara learns that Lex and Red Daughter know that Kara is Supergirl. Kara is also confronted with the possibility that if not for her own upbringing after landing on earth that she, too, could just as easily been manipulated into being a weapon. On the flight home, Kara is about to reveal herself to Lena, but doesn’t because Lena is still reeling from Eve’s duplicity and betrayal.
Kara takes what she has learned to the president. A hunk of kryptonite sits on his desk, in case Supergirl returns. He takes the evidence from Kara and files it away in an empty drawer. The president presses a button on his desk and an unseen assailant slips a hood over Kara’s head.
