In the previous episode of Netflix’s Sex Education, Otis took Maeve home after an abortion, and Eric bonded with Lily. In Sex Education season 1 episode 4, Jackson asked Otis for advice about Maeve, and Jean is drawn to a Swedish handyman.
Inexperienced
Otis’ patients this week were Tanya and Ruthie. They were two recently out lesbians, and though Tanya was enthusiastic, Ruthie wasn’t enjoying sex. Otis insisted that their sex problem was likely intertwined with issues in their relationship.
Sure enough, Otis saw Ruthie with Jessa, and she looked more comfortable showing Jessa affection. Otis confronted Ruthie, who admitted that she and Tanya only got together because they were close friends who came out around the same time. For Ruthie, it felt wrong to be with Tanya but right with Jessa. Despite how much it would hurt her, Ruthie had to tell Tanya.
Mum-Man
Maeve refused to hang out with Jackson outside of their hookups. He gave Otis money to give him advice. He tried refusing it, but Jackson wouldn’t take the money back. Otis inadvertently gave Jackson advice about Maeve’s interests, and Jackson made sure Maeve saw him indulging in the same interests.
After helping Tanya and Ruthie at the school pool, Maeve pushed him in, and they had a playful water fight. She touched Otis’ eyebrows, and suddenly, he insisted she leave. Eric found him still in the pool thirty minutes later because Otis had an erection that he couldn’t get rid of. Eric insisted the only course of action was to masturbate. Unfortunately, Otis still couldn’t.
Otis admitted to Eric that he was in love with Maeve. Soon after, Jackson came back for more advice. Otis snapped and told him to try a grand gesture, something Maeve complained about to him earlier. However, the bad advice backfired after a surprise musical performance. Maeve was now Jackson’s girlfriend.
Research
Jean brought a man at the door inside to treat his scrotal anxiety. Unfortunately, the man, Jakob, wasn’t a patient, but there to work on her bathroom renovation. Jakob and Jean seemed to be attracted to each other. He encouraged her to write, even though she confessed she had struggled after her divorce.
Jakob’s daughter, Ola, came to pick him up. She accidentally walked in on Otis watching lesbian porn. He insisted it was for research purposes. The next day, Ola had her father install a latch on the door.
Madam
Because Eric’s father insisted he get a job, Eric worked as a dogwalker. However, he couldn’t handle all the dogs at once, and a few dogs, including Madam, had gotten away. Adam was at the park; Madam happened to be his mother’s dog. She ran away again, and Adam went after her but couldn’t find her. Adam’s father blamed him for losing Madam. Adam was already on thin ice with his grades and behavior. One morning, Eric and his father found their car cover in dog feces.
