Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is back for season 2! When we last left off, Midge opened for Lenny Bruce, and Joel was there to see the act. In The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 2 episode 1, some time had passed, and Midge now worked as a phone operator at the department store.
Stay in the Moment
Abe called Midge at work to come home right away. Rose hadn’t come back from Paris. This was the first Midge had heard about Paris, and Abe explained what Rose had told him: she was unhappy and going to Paris. He interpreted it as a shopping trip, but Midge realized it meant she moved to Paris. They confirmed with the maid, Zelda, who handed over her address that had been in full view.
When they arrived, Abe and Midge found Rose in a small, furniture-less apartment where she had lived in college. She had a dog named Simone and claimed to have a life now in Paris. That night, they met for dinner. Midge wanted Rose to come to her senses so she could go home, but Abe resolved not to leave the city until Rose came with him. Alone with her mother, Midge reminded her that she had made a commitment to her husband, and Rose pointed out the irony.
Midge wandered the streets of Paris until she found a club. After the show was over, she realized it was a drag show. She began an impromptu stand-up routine, and a woman from New York, Lillian, interpreted what she said for the crowd. She told the audience about Joel, and by the end of it, everyone was in tears.
Faults, Mistakes, and Failures
Joel was still living with his parents. He met and drank with his friend during the day. His mother’s friend called to tell him to call his mother because of an emergency. Shirley claimed she had run out of cheese for a party. When Joel was home, he overheard his parents arguing. Shirley wanted to talk to Joel about his father’s business being in trouble but covered it up since Moishe insisted it was his own business.
Midge called Joel from Paris. He explained they couldn’t be together because he couldn’t be the butt of her jokes if they were together, and neither of them wanted her to give it up.
The Rockaways
A booker named Morris Abramson, called Susie to book Midge for a show in Philadelphia. The cards had worked. After Susie talked Midge up to a reporter, two guys forced her to come with them. She thought they worked for Harry Drake. They took her on a subway to the Rockaways, which happened to be where Susie grew up. By the time she got to the house, they became friends, even though they were supposed to rough her up. They were going to tell their boss they couldn’t find her and would let her go, but they warned her to set things straight before he sent someone else.
