An episode of American Monster, titled “Safe at Home,” will be re-aired on ID on March 7, 2024, at 5 p.m. ET. It will delve into the murder of 43-year-old Doris Hoskins, who was killed by Mark Andrews, her husband.
Andrews was convicted of first-degree murder in connection with the death of his wife, Doris Hoskins. She was killed after he attacked her with a hammer in the couple’s home on January 8, 2016, AP News reported. He was 47 when he killed his wife, who was a teacher in the Keller Independent School District. He was arrested only hours after the killing, following which he was sentenced to life in prison.
Athens Daily Review reported that Doris Hoskins, who was a mother of three at the time of death, suffered blunt force trauma to the head and body. The police arrived at the crime scene after they received a call a little after 4:30 a.m. on January 8, 2016. Doris Hoskins was already dead, and Mark Andrews was still at the crime scene when they arrived. At least one child was reportedly at home at the time.
By the time when authorities arrived, Mark Andrews alleged that he didn’t kill Doris Hoskins. He claimed he had found her dead on that day at their Azle home. Andrews was a professional gambler and claimed he left in the morning to go to the WinStar Casino in Oklahoma. According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, on the way to the casino, he realized he left behind money and returned home when he found Doris unresponsive. He then attempted CPR on her and yelled for a couple living with them to call 911.
Why did Mark Andrews kill his wife, Doris Hoskins?
Doris Hoskins had two life insurances that Mark Andrews reportedly wanted to cash on. He allegedly wanted to collect more than $373,000 on both policies. Andrews was facing financial troubles and hoped to resolve them after killing his wife, Doris Hoskins.
Prosecutors also argued that Andrews was an abusive partner. They alleged that it was a pattern of violence that led up to the murder of Doris, Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported. The prosecutors argued that Andrews attacked Doris Hoskins with a hammer while she was asleep. He then opened their safe to make it seem like an intruder had killed her.
At the trial that led to Mark Andrews’ conviction, three of his former wives and an ex-girlfriend called him “a pathological liar.” They testified that he mooched off them financially. He also allegedly cheated on them and moved on to a new relationship before breaking up. Moreover, two of the women claimed that he physically abused them. Another person who provided details in the trial was Joseph Roy, Andrews’ former pastor.
According to Roy, Mark Andrews claimed he had been injured in Afghanistan during his time serving in the military. This claim was proved false by military records. The records also revealed that he never served in the Special Ops. He had enlisted in the Air Force and was discharged because of misconduct. As per Fort Worth Star-Telegram, he was released only two years and four months into his service.
