American Monster: Who Is David Sumney & What Did He Do?

In August 2019, a Pennsylvania man named David Sumney reportedly tortured and murdered his 67-year-old mother, Margaret. This incident happened in the latter’s home, which was located in South Lafayette, Louisiana. Furthermore, Sumney took more than 250 photos of his crime, which included selfies and pictures of his mother’s corpse.

This horrific case will be covered in detail in the upcoming episode of American Monster, which will air on Sunday, November 12, 2023, at 9 p.m. ET on ID. This episode is titled “Spoiled to Death.”

The official synopsis of the upcoming episode reads, “David Sumney Sr. and his wife, Margaret, devote their lives to spoiling their only son, David; however, everything comes at a price, and when his parents divorce, David Jr.’s anger escalates, resulting in the deadliest of sins.”

What did David Sumney do?

According to Sportskeeda, David Sumney fatally beat his mother Margaret to death in August 2019. When officials discovered the body of the deceased, they learned that she had fractured ribs and a fractured spine. Moreover, there were contusions on her body, and her face had lacerations.

Sumney then did the unthinkable as he reportedly took 277 pictures of the crime he committed. These photographs even included selfies with blood smeared on his face and Margaret’s corpse.

The court sentenced the killer to 20 years in prison. However, he could get out in 17 years. During his court hearing, Sumney said, “I cannot believe I would let myself get in such a state where I could do something so bad, so horrible. I cannot believe what I did, that I killed my own mother. I cannot stop thinking about it. I think about it every day. I’m sorry, but sorry doesn’t cut it. I handled things as badly as a person could have.”

According to The Daily Beast, due to a plea deal, he escaped from charges like first-degree murder and abusing a corpse.
