In the days following Stalin’s collapse, his core team of ministers tussle for control; some want positive change in the 1950’s Soviet Union, others have more sinister motives. Their one common trait? They’re all just desperately trying to remain alive.
The film stars Steve Buscemi (Fargo), Simon Russell Beale (Into the Woods), Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter series), Michael Palin (Monty Python’s Flying Circus), Andrea Riseborough (Birdman), Rupert Friend (Homeland) and Jeffrey Tambor (Arrest Development).
A film that combines comedy, drama, pathos and political manoeuvring, The Death of Stalin is a Quad and Main Journey production, directed by Armando Iannucci, and produced by Yann Zenou, Kevin Loader, Nicolas Duval Assakovsky, and Laurent Zeitoun. The script is written by Iannucci, David Schneider and Ian Martin, with additional material by Peter Fellows. Based on Titan Comics graphic novel by Fabien Nury with art by Thierry Robin, The Death of Stalin is inspired by the true story of the events surrounding Joseph Stalin’s death more than half a century ago.
The film will make its premiere in September at the Toronto International Film Festival, followed by a UK release on October 20.
