Interviews with the Deepwater Horizon cast
Deepwater Horizon tells the story of the infamous oil rig explosion that killed 11 people back in 2010. The film stars Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, Kate Hudson, Gina Rodriguez and John Malkovich, and takes us through the events that lead up to the disaster that caused the largest oil spill in the industry’s history. The Lionsgate film, directed by Peter Berg (Lone Survivor), uses largely practical effects and reportedly had one of the largest sets in filmmaking history. Wahlberg plays real-life survivor Mike Williams, who was a consultant throughout the entire production.
We recently sat down with Wahlberg, Russell and Rodriguez in New Orleans, Louisiana, where most of the film was shot, to talk about their experience. Wahlberg, who was also a producer on the film, told us what it was like to have a resource like Williams on set and how open he was about his traumatic experiences on the rig. We learned all about working on this enormous set and how they prepared for some incredibly intense scenes. Russell, who plays rig boss Jimmy “Mr. Jimmy” Harrell, and Rodriguez, who plays Andrea Fleytas, the first person to report the disaster, talked about the responsibility of portraying people who are still alive and getting it right, as well as Berg’s unusual directing style. He would often decide to change what scene they were doing because he was inspired that day. Rodriguez also gave us a look at some of the incredible stunts in the film and talked about the only one she wasn’t allowed to do.
The film premiered at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival and will hit theaters on September 30, 2016. Check out our interviews with the Deepwater Horizon cast below.
