Check out the American Pastoral trailer for a look at Ewan McGregor’s directorial debut

Lionsgate and Lakeshore Entertainment today revealed the first American Pastoral trailer, offering a look at the upcoming feature film directorial debut of Ewan McGregor. Check it out in the player below!

Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Phillip Roth, American Pastoral follows a family whose seemingly idyllic existence is shattered by the social and political turmoil of the 1960s.

As you can see in the below American Pastoral trailer, McGregor also headlines the film as Seymour “Swede” Levov, a once legendary high school athlete who is now a successful businessman married to Dawn (Jennifer Connelly), a former beauty queen. But turmoil brews beneath the polished veneer of Swede’s life. When his beloved teenage daughter, Merry (Dakota Fanning), disappears after being accused of committing a savage act of political terrorism, Swede dedicates himself to finding her and reuniting his family. What he discovers shakes him to the core, forcing him to look beneath the surface and confront the chaos that is shaping the world around him.

The American Pastoral cast also includes David Strathairn, Peter Riegert, Uzo Aduba and Valorie Curry.

American Pastoral’s adapted screenplay was written by John Romano (Lincoln Lawyer) with Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi producing. Look for it to hit the big screen in a limited release October 21, 2016 with plans to then expand one week later on October 28.

American Pastoral isn’t the only Phillip Roth movie headed to the big screen this year. His 2008 novel Indignation is also getting a feature film adaptation. Look for the movie version, directed by James Schamus, to hit theaters July 29.
