We’ve already seen one film from Noah Baumbach this year, the highly praised but (in my opinion) somewhat disappointing While We’re Young, and come the end of the summer we get to see another, Mistress America, which finds Baumbach joining forces with his Frances Ha and Greenberg muse Greta Gerwig.
Today brings the first trailer for the film, as well as a new poster that looks very Whit Stillman-y at first glance… and at second glance… and at third glance, too. Not a bad thing, as I’m a Whit Stillman fan, and with Frances Ha my favorite Baumbach film thus far, I’m pretty excited to see what comes of an apparent screwball comedy that reunites the creative forces of Baumbach and Gerwig.
Mistress America stars Lola Kirke — whom you might recognize from Gone Girl — as Tracy, a lonely college freshman in New York who is having neither the exciting university experience nor the glamorous metropolitan lifestyle she envisioned. But when she is taken in by her soon-to-be stepsister, Brooke (Gerwig) — a resident of Times Square and adventurous gal about town — Tracy is rescued from her disappointment and seduced by Brooke’s alluringly mad schemes.
The film is being sold as “Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig’s new comedy about dream-chasing, score-settling, and cat stealing”, and aside from the fact I don’t really like cats, I’m already looking forward to this one. Mistress America is set to hit theaters August 14, and you can check out the trailer and poster below.
