London Road is a musical I am not terribly familiar with. As far as I know, there is no cast recording for it, which is the primary way for me to get into a show. The show premiered at the National Theatre in 2011 to pretty positive reviews and receiving four Olivier nominations. It ended up losing Best New Musical to Matilda, but if you have seen that show (like I have), you want it to win everything.
Thankfully, the musical is getting the movie treatment, and the new trailer is available for you to watch below. The film features the original cast of the show plus the added bonuses of Olivia Colman and, probably the reason most people will give this film a shot, Tom Hardy.
London Road centers around the Ipswich murders of Steve Knight, who killed five prostitutes in 2006, and his subsequent trial. The dialogue and lyrics of the show are verbatim from the actual people who were interviewed about the murders. The show is not about the murders, per say, but actually about the people in the town they happened in. Take that, people who think all musicals are just frivolous!
I think it sounds extremely interesting and hope it gets US distribution soon. In the meantime, watch the trailer below.
