Following the lack of success of Chasing Mavericks, a film budgeted at $20 million that eventually made $5.8 million (almost half of which was made in the first three days of release) I have to wonder if Wrekin Hill regrets picking up North American rights to the Aussie surfer drama Drift about a month before Mavericks drowned at the box-office.
Today the first trailer for Drift arrives, which stars Sam Worthington and is supposedly based on a true story. Set in the ’70s, the story follows the Kelly brothers (Xavier Samuel and Myles Pollard) who launch a backyard surf gear business but get caught up with a local drug dealer. Morgan O’Neill and Ben Nott directed O’Neill’s screenplay.
Following Avatar, Sam Worthington was everywhere, which prompted me to ask “Are You Sold On Sam Worthington? Hollywood is…” I’m sure he’ll be asked back for Avatar 2 and then some, but with the Clash of the Titans movies and movies like Man on a Ledge has his stock started to fall?
Worthington does have Ten for David Ayer (End of Watch) alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger coming in 2013, but I can’t help but feel as if Worthington’s star status has dramatically weakened in the past three years. Thoughts?
