This week’s edition of Overlooked Trailers has damn near every single kind of movie you could imagine from low-budget found footage horror, to drama, to thriller, to sci-fi, to martial arts, documentary and stop-motion animation.
The first trailer below is for Toys in the Attic, an English adaptation of the 2009 French stop motion film, which looks like more of a darker version of Toy Story told through stop-motion rather than CGI. After that is Deadfall, a thriller starring Eric Bana, Olivia Wilde, Charlie Hunnam, Sissy Spacek and Kris Kristofferson, which is to say it has a loaded cast, but wasn’t able to land a major distributor. Could still be a decent watch however.
Then there’s The Letter, a low-budget feature with James Franco and Winona Ryder that looks like one of those “is it all in her head?” films with Franco staring off into the distance like a creep, a paranoid Ryder and some B-movie looking photography.
Page two includes a pair of Toronto Film Festival features in Tai Chi 0 and Inescapable, a new international trailer for Toronto opener Looper and a red band trailer for another Toronto entry, End of Watch starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena.

Toys in the Attic

Set in a magical world of toys and knick-knacks stored in the attic of a home in Prague, this award-winning stop-motion animated feature has been called “An animation masterpiece” (Anima Basuari), and “a diabolically inventive tale that is four parts Toy Story and one part Tim Burton” (New York International Children’s Film Festival).
The setting for the film was inspired by the cultural and political contrast of the Cold War era and its impact on director Jiri Barta and the Czech Republic. The world of the attic is divided into the land of happy toys in the West and the Land of Evil in the East. The despotic Head of State rules over the Land of Evil with a band of sinister minions, insects and rotted vegetables. When the lovely Buttercup (Vivian Schilling) is kidnapped and held prisoner by The Head (Jiri Labus, with voice by Douglas Urbanski), it is up to her friends – a teddy bear (Forest Whitaker), a mechanical mouse (Joan Cusack) and marionette puppet (Cary Elwes) to cross the international boundary and attempt their daring rescue.
Toys in the Attic is a meticulously crafted visual feast, combining multiple forms of animation into an enchanting and fantastic adventure for the entire family.
Deadfall

Siblings Addison (Eric Bana) and Liza (Olivia Wilde) are on the run from a casino heist gone wrong. When a car accident leaves their wheel man and a state trooper dead, they split up and make a run for the Canadian border in the worst of circumstances – a near whiteout blizzard. While Addison heads cross-country, creating mayhem in his wake, Liza is picked up by ex-boxer Jay (Charlie Hunnam), en-route for a Thanksgiving homecoming with his parents, June (Sissy Spacek) and retired sheriff Chet (Kris Kristofferson). It’s there the siblings are reunited in a terse and thrilling showdown that pushes the bonds of family to the limit.

Martine Jamison (Winona Ryder) is a NY theatre director beginning rehearsals for a new play starring her boyfriend Raymond (Josh Hamilton) opposite a young beauty. They are joined by an unknown newcomer, Tyrone (James Franco), who develops a peculiar fascination with Martine and is openly hostile to all others. As rehearsals continue, Martine has periods of disorientation that quickly deteriorate into vivid hallucinations as she becomes convinced someone is trying to poison her. As Martine’s mental state devolves she begins to rewrite her play…and art and life become inseparable.
