One of the major studio debuts to hit this year’s SXSW was Bridesmaids and The Heat director Paul Feig’s latest, the Melissa McCarthy-led espionage action comedy Spy! Earlier this week, we brought you an in-depth conversation with Feig himself (wherein he also chats about his highly-anticipated Ghostbusters reboot) and now we’re back with even more from Feig and stars Jason Statham and Bobby Cannavale. ComingSoon.net caught up with all three talents in the middle of the festival.
Featuring a massive ensemble cast that also includes Jude Law, Rose Byrne, Morena Baccarin and many more, Spy stars McCarthy as CIA Agent Susan Cooper, who, despite yearning for some action in the field, has been stuck working an office job, playing second fiddle to Statham and Law’s super agents. That all changes, however, when a twist of fate puts Cooper in the crosshairs, giving her a chance to prove herself and, just maybe, save the day.
In the below interview, the trio explain how getting the best laughs means playing the scenes as seriously as possible while Statham jokes that, after Spy, he’s done with straightforward action films. Check it out in the player below and look for Spy to hit theaters on June 5!
