CS Video: Tim Burton, Amy Adams and More on Big Eyes

Director Tim Burton’s name has become synonymous with films that convey a unique vision that he’s cultivated over the course of 17 films and 30 years. 

For his latest, Big Eyes, Burton reunites with Ed Wood screenwriters Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski to tell the story of Margaret and Walter Keane, as played by Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz, a pair of California painters who meet and fall in love during the late ’50s. At that time, Margaret’s been painting big-eyed waifs that immediately take the fancy of everyone who sees them, but Walter takes credit for painting them as the “big eyes” become a global cultural phenomenon with most of the world thinking Walter is the artist.

Big Eyes covers the course of the Keane’s relationship and how they kept the secret of the true artist away from anyone who inquired, including her daughter from a previous marriage.

But other than his regular production designer Rick Heinrichs and costume designer Colleen Atwood, both of whom have won Oscars for their work on bringing Tim Burton’s vision to the screen, Burton is working with a lot of new people who haven’t appeared in his previous films. Besides Adams and Waltz, these include Krysten Ritter who plays Margaret’s friend Dee-Ann, Jason Schwartzman as an art gallery owner named Ruben who first sees and snubs his nose at Margaret’s “big eye” paintings,” while journalist Dick Nolan (Danny Huston) sees an opportunity to get more personal with the eccentric painter behind the waifs.

Big Eyes opens nationwide on Christmas Day, next Thursday, December 25.
